Caught a buzz: High-touch design for a future-focused coffee roaster
Bellwether, a Berkeley-based coffee-roaster startup selected One Hat One Hand to design their headquarters. Beginning with the directive to echo the design of their novel, IDEO-designed, zero-emissions coffee roaster, we created a space that was natural and minimal, with a hint toward the future. Our inspiration included subtle architectural elements that echoed the clean lines of their industrial design: we focused on rich materials like copper and walnut for custom features in the tasting area and community nook, and we utilized a new, all-white Laminate that was an elegant and enduring alternative to the norm.
Bridging from rendering into production, a big challenge included fabricating various custom pieces in a short time frame to meet Bellwether’s deadline. Our white-glove installation in the lobby included faux concrete work, hidden lighting, a custom sculptural interpretation of Bellwether’s logo, and our final touch of custom wallpaper crafted to feel like the lush vegetation of a coffee farm brought indoors.
